Bed Bugs Infesting Spanish Hotels

Don’t let the bed bugs bite…even if you are staying in a hotel in Spain. The authorities in Madrid recently declared war on bedbugs. Bed bugs that have infested many hotels throughout Spain at a very alarming rate. The government in Madrid published a manual to raise awareness of the tiny bugs and just exactly how to get rid of bed bugs.

Today the infestation problem seems to have gotten a lot worse. The declared number of cases has risen significantly. Many are worried that it has reached the point of an epidemic. The bugs’ dramatic reappearance apparently coincides with the withdrawal of powerful chemicals like DDT, which killed the insects but were unfortunately harmful to the environment.

Bed bugs are mostly found in mattresses and become active at night when they feed on the blood of sleeping humans who are completely unaware that they are offering a midnight feast. Until the next morning when red welts show up on the victim’s body. Fortunately, the flat, brownish-red creatures do not transmit any diseases. But they do leave some blood and feces on the bed sheets, which can have a very unpleasant smell. The infestations rose by as much as 20 percent in 2008 in Spain, according to a study. Hotels has been particularly badly affected. Four and five-star hotels were the worst hit.
