Bed Bugs Infesting Spanish Hotels

Don’t let the bed bugs bite…even if you are staying in a hotel in Spain. The authorities in Madrid recently declared war on bedbugs. Bed bugs that have infested many hotels throughout Spain at a very alarming rate. The government in Madrid published a manual to raise awareness of the tiny bugs and just exactly how to get rid of bed bugs.

Today the infestation problem seems to have gotten a lot worse. The declared number of cases has risen significantly. Many are worried that it has reached the point of an epidemic. The bugs’ dramatic reappearance apparently coincides with the withdrawal of powerful chemicals like DDT, which killed the insects but were unfortunately harmful to the environment.

Bed bugs are mostly found in mattresses and become active at night when they feed on the blood of sleeping humans who are completely unaware that they are offering a midnight feast. Until the next morning when red welts show up on the victim’s body. Fortunately, the flat, brownish-red creatures do not transmit any diseases. But they do leave some blood and feces on the bed sheets, which can have a very unpleasant smell. The infestations rose by as much as 20 percent in 2008 in Spain, according to a study. Hotels has been particularly badly affected. Four and five-star hotels were the worst hit.

There are several ways to get rid of bed bugs, but one new way to get rid of bedbugs, and it is not what may first come to mind. Incredibly, bedbug infestations are increasing and are now up more than 70 percent in the last 10 years. These creepy pests do not just hide in beds. You can also find them in chairs and even wall sockets. They like to retreat to safe area during the day.

However, you can keep them from biting by calling on the dogs. With these dogs, the nose knows where the bedbugs are hiding. The dogs will search an entire hotel room in one-to-two minutes. They can detect as few as one egg or one bedbug.The dog is just one weapon in the fight against this growing bed bug problem. Infestations are on the rise in homes, hotels, nursing homes and other buildings too.

One entomologist and his team developed a pesticide-free system to kill bedbug infestations. It works like a bedbug oven. It only takes about 113 degrees Fahrenheit to kill bedbugs. They build a foam box around the infested furniture, then heat the enclosed area to about 140 degrees with a space heater and waits. The entire process takes two-to-five hours with no damage to furniture. In nine of 11 tests, the system killed 100 percent of the bedbugs. The cost of this system is about $300. Commercial treatment for a typical room costs $300-$800 and takes about 12 hours. Using oil-based space heaters eliminates the risk of fire.

Bed Bugs Continue To Present Problems

Most people that travel on vacations stay at hotels and resorts. The probably never think about it until it’s too late, but they may have some unwelcomed guest bugs. Bed bugs, as they are referred to, don’t make good roommates when you’re on a vacation. And they sure aren’t any more hospitable if you take them home with you. Bed bugs were once thoughts to be eliminated from the North American continent. However, the pesky little pests, bed bugs, have been making an uninvited comeback in many hotels and homes. Bed bugs are easy to transport in luggage and you won’t even notice them until they start wreaking havoc in your home when you get back there. Bed Bugs are very difficult to get rid of once they cozy up in your home. For this reason they have become a nuisance for hotels. Not surprisingly, hotels are not eager to publicize their guest infestations. Until a reliable, safe pesticide becomes available, bed bugs could continue to be a real problem.
