Explosion in Bed Bugs Could Result in Return of DDT
For unknown reasons, bed bugs infestations in certain cities around the world have increased dramatically. Cities in the U.S., Africa, Europe, and Canada have seen a significant rise in bed bugs. These little bugs get their name from their favorite habitat, which is mattresses (they also like other soft furniture like sofas). Some experts believe the reason for the increase is the rejection of DDT, a harsh insecticide (with chlorinated hydrocarbons) that works against bed bugs. Gentler insecticides simply don’t work as well. Other products that make use of cedar oil, natural enzymes, and cinnamon are said to work, but not as effectively as DDT. There are those people that believe we are seeing a bed bug epidemic. And there are some who are now willing to bring back DDT in small doses and specific applications only.
