Symptoms
There are a variety of ways to determine whether you have bed bugs or not. Some of these bed bug symptoms are fairly obvious, and other symptoms may require you to do a little investigative work. Below is a list of the four most common bed bug symptoms.
You See Bed Bugs– It is quite rare that a person actually sees bed bugs. However, it does happen. Unfortunately, if you see a bed bug, you likely have a very large infestation. Believe it or not, there are actually monitors available for purchase that can help you capture bed bugs. The way these monitors work is by mimicking human breathing. sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Other ways of catching these little blood suckers include using Vaseline or double-sided tape under the furniture.
Bites - If you have been bitten by bed bugs, you will likely see the bites. Some people do not show any effects of bed bug bites. The bites are usually small bumps and they are often red. Itchiness and swelling are common as well. Go here for a picture of bed bugs bites.
The most common places to be bitten are the neck, face, arms, and hands. However, they are not limited to only those areas of the body. Differentiating between bed bug bites and other insects is pretty easy. Bed bug bites are often three in a line with two puncture marks. The three bites have been referred to as breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Stains – Brace yourself for this one. Bed bugs leave excrement and exoskeletons. These can be found in the creases of the bed sheets and mattresses. The excrement is reddish or brownish stains on your mattress or on furniture. Small infestations make it hard to see this evidence. The exoskeletons that bed bugs shed may be even harder to find. They are tiny and will usually disintegrate easily.
Sweet Odor – Bed bugs are not sweet, but they do emit a sweet musty smell. You may be able to detect it in your room if you have bed bugs. However, once again, you are unlikely to pick up the smell unless you have a huge infestation.
