Treat Bed Bugs

Are You Safe From The Bed Bug Bites?

Archive for September 6th, 2008

sorry about the former question, I think we found more bedbugs in our cottage. I think it is in our matresses which are old, but my question is that we had the cottage fumigated two years ago, and wondering if they are still with us. we live in north west canada and seem s the cold winters do not kill the bugs. The matresses are gone and rugs also.
hope this can help with my problem

Getting Rid of Bed Bugs-Once an infestation has occurred, patience and persistence is the key to ridding the area of bed bugs. It isn’t enough to clean the mattresses and launder the sheets. Furniture should be overturned and cleaned. Carpeting, wood molding, door jambs, picture frames, and closets should be inspected as well. Bed bugs can hide behind loose wallpaper, in the crevices between carpets and walls, behind outlet covers, and inside light fixtures, smoke detectors, and even clocks. Removable, washable items can be laundered in very hot water. For those areas or items which can not be laundered, smaller items can be wrapped in plastic and set in a hot place or in direct sunlight. The key is to raise the temperature to at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours to kill the eggs and the bugs. Vacuuming and steam cleaning may also be done, but any bags or canisters should be thrown away or emptied outside of the area immediately to prevent another infestation. The best method of removing bed bugs, however, is through a professionally handled treatment.
..Good Luck! =)

Don’t Try These Methods-Finally, there are several methods that are totally useless and shouldn’t even be considered. Bug bombs and aerosol pesticides will not rid an area of bed bugs. While extreme hot and cold temperatures may affect the infestation, below freezing temperatures will only work if those temperatures remain below freezing for over two weeks.

I threw away so many things from my apartment (old clothes, sheets, etc.) they just keep coming back. I steam vaccuumed the carpet atleast 4 times, i sprayed bug spray all over and still i saw one today.

Bed bugs are challenging pests to control. They hide in many tiny places, so inspections and treatments must be very thorough. In most cases, it will be prudent to enlist the services of a professional pest control firm. Experienced companies know where to look for bed bugs, and have an assortment of management tools at their disposal. Owners and occupants will need to assist the professional in important ways. Affording access for inspection and treatment is essential, and excess clutter should be removed. In some cases, infested mattresses and box springs will need to be discarded. Since bed bugs can disperse throughout a building, it also may be necessary to inspect adjoining rooms and apartments.

Good luck!

i can't figure out weather the bugs i found in my house bird mites or bed bugs. they are both mites that feed on human blood, but when i do a search all the information is correct but the pictures don't exactly match. i don't want to treat for the wrong thing while the infestation grows. what should i do?

im guessing its bird mites the only way to really tell if there bed bugs is if u go to all the beds in your house and take all the sheets off and look under the mattres if thats where u see a lot of them im guessing there bedbugs ushally bedbugs dont roam around all over the house they ushally stay near your beds

We have bed bugs and cant afford to get the place sprayed(we live in an apartment and the owner wont put any money into it). So i was wondering since garlic aparently stops fleas from liking your blood.
We have tryed reporting our owner for his carelessness
We couldent do anything to get rid of them since its through out the whole apartment building. No one else will do their part.

No there is nothing you can eat to stop them.

If you are in the USA, the laws regarding financial liability for the infestation varies from state to state and if the entire apartment block is infested…. everyone would probably need to participate in a program.

TEMPORARY SOLUTION. Thoroughly inspect and vacuum your mattress and boxspring, use a steaming iron to kill any of the ones you cannot see (the heat kills them), seal the box spring in a mattress bag and be sure to seal it properly, then pull the bed away from the wall and place all the legs in a small cup of water mixed with pine sol or any chemical really, or put the bedposts on the rat trap sticky paper. Keep the sheets from touching the floor and then they cannot get to you

I know this sounds extreme, but if the apartment wont join in, there is little else you can do since DDT has been erroneously banned.

Best of luck

I've been living in a rented property which has been infested with bed bugs, we have has the infestation treated but there are lots of stains on the matress.
We are now moving out of the property and don't want to loose the secrity deposit.

Any ideas how to get it out?

You can do a fair job of cleaning the mattress:
You'll need a good cleaner….the OxyClean is a good idea but others like Bio-OX will do too. Apply to spots, wait about 5 minutes and then blot with clean WHITE towels. Press down and hold for 30 seconds to really absorb the moisture. You may need to treat again. Keep blotting until the spot is dry. You'll use a ton of white towels. If the stain remains after two washings, time for serious action.

Put some clear, non-sudsy household ammonia in a clean spray bottle. Take a clean, white, absorbent cloth and dampen it with water. Heat your iron to Medium-High. Spray the stain with the ammonia. Place the dampened cloth over the stain. Iron the cloth over the stained area. Make sure to keep your face away from the ammonia fumes. Respray the stain as needed and redampen the cloth (don't let it dry out). The spots should lift onto the cloth.
